2019 | Narrative Feature | English | 97 min
When a young First Nations client dies in police custody, free-spirited social worker Stevie (Astrid Van Wieren) opens her home as a safe haven for George (Marcel Stewart), an ex-con and gambler, Tracy (Claire Burns), a drug-seeking musician, and Mina (Sharmila Dey), a battered wife. Delving into the dangers of crossing professional lines, director Jon Michaelson delivers a full ensemble of raw emotion and visceral tension in this social realist drama.
Influenced by the films of Mike Leigh and John Cassavetes' work with Gena Rowlands, THE RIVER YOU STEP IN comes to life with the participation of award-winning actress Astrid Van Wieren of Broadway's Come From Away.
